The Body of Gold Podcast: From Depression to No Distress
In this episode of the Body of Gold Podcast, I had the opportunity to speak with Karlise Cureton. Karlise founded DamselNODistress.com to help women who are stumbling through adulthood pull themselves out of distress and work their way forward. Karlise opens up by speaking on her journey to overcome distress. After going through a divorce, dropping out of college due to a sports injury causing her to lose her scholarship and stagnating working at a call center, Karlise decided that was rock bottom and she wanted a change.
While looking for help, she noticed there were no resources for women who were in her situation nor women who looked like her. Karlise felt there were a good amount of resources to help single minority women with low incomes and children, but none for minority women from the suburbs who were simply just struggling to make it. She finally decided to open up WordPress one day to play around with the idea of starting a blog and ended up launching her blog that same day. I then express in a situation in a similar circumstance regarding my time in Seattle, WA. I was depressed, although, I thought I was following my dream.
I truly believe that sometimes we find our purpose through pain because my experience caused me to launch my business Thick, Bold, and Healthy similar to Karlise’s struggles with launching her blog and eventually going on to buy her own domain for her website. This then leads her to her passion for becoming a full-time freelance writer.
Karlise explains how her life changed after her track injury and she struggled with weight gain. She continued to eat like an athlete without the same amount of activity. After going through her journey, she realized and quotes, “If your body isn’t your job, then your job is to love it. If we aren’t willing to workout 8 hours a day then don’t compare yourself to someone who has to workout 8 hours a day.”
