From the Newsroom to Owning a Health Brand for Minority Women
In the third episode of the Body of Gold Podcast, I interview Porcha Johnson. Porcha is a health advocate whose strength is in motivating women to live healthier lifestyles. Porcha founded Black Girl Health in 2014, a digital outreach company that creates social media campaigns that helps businesses connect with minority women. Throughout this episode, she explains how she transitioned from being a televised news reporter to owning a health brand for minority women. Porsha was in the television business for 15 years and has since drawn back in her field to apply all her attention to Black Girl Health. She explains the importance of following her passion and creating a career out of something she loves.
Porcha’s struggle with thyroids also fueled her passion to develop Black Girl Health by increasing health awareness for women of color. She speaks about the lack of knowledge in exercise and diet within the community. The platform Black Girl Health is meant to educate women of color and is an outlet for women to practice being healthy. Porcha reflects on feeling pressured to be and remain healthy because she is the face of her company, which so happens to be a health brand.
After launching her business, Porcha had her son, Remy and talks about the struggles of her journey to get back into shape as a new mom. Porcha struggled with losing weight because of hormone imbalance and thyroid issues after giving birth. She reveals that she doesn’t view her body the same now as before pregnancy and has tried various diets such as no carbs, no alcohol, or meat for thirty days. Although she holds herself accountable for her actions, she isn’t hard on herself. Being kind to yourself is important Porcha says and while it is important to have goals it is equally as important not to let a mental imbalance of the goal of weight loss distract you from being happy or feeling good about your body.
